How clubs fair in the market can contribute to how well they perform during the season.
Some players are reaching the end of their contracts this year and would make valuable additions to those looking to solidify and improve.
Mirror Sport has put together a team of those available for nothing, but who makes our Free Transfer XI…
Willy Caballero- Chelsea
The Argentine stopper joined Chelsea from Man City two years ago and has enjoyed some good times at Stamford Bridge, winning the FA Cup in his first season.
The 37-year-old has made 21 appearances in all competitions for the Blues, keeping nine clean sheets in that time.
Antonio Valencia – Manchester United
Red Devils club captain Antonio Valencia is available on a free this summer after 10 years at Old Trafford. Although he signed as a winger, the Ecuadorian was developed into an attacking right-back quickly becoming a regular on the team sheet.
The 33-year-old has 338 appearances under his belt for the club, scoring 25 times and assisting 62.
Valencia has won two Premier League’s, two League Cups, three Community Shields, one FA Cup and an Europa League title since he joined from Wigan.
Gary Cahill – Chelsea
Gary Cahill was given a big goodbye after playing his final game at Stamford Bridge against Watford last week.
He does not know where his future lies, but he could be handed a Premier League lifeline by Burnley, if reports in recent weeks are to be believed.
Cahill was once a mainstay of the Chelsea squad after signing from Bolton and could prove to be valuable experience in any dressing room if he is snapped up.
Vincent Kompany – Manchester City
Veteran defender Vincent Kompany is into the final year of his contract at the Etihad, the Belgian mountain has been at the club since 2008.
The 33-year-old has captained City to three Premier League titles, four League Cups (including back-to-back wins in 2018 and 2019), one FA Cup and two Community Shields.
With one game to go this season Kompany and City could become four time Premier League winners and if it was to be his final game for the club it would be one hell of a way to end.
Nacho Monreal – Arsenal
Spanish gallivanting left back Nacho Monreal is also out of contract this summer and available on a free.
Since joining the club in 2012, the 33-year-old has made 246 appearances for the Gunners, scoring 10 goals and assisting 20.
However under Unai Emery, Sead Kolasinac seems to be favoured to Monreal in the league and he has seen his play-time diminish.
Juan Mata – Manchester United
Man Utd’s list of players available for free also includes the influential Juan Mata.
The playmaker joined the club in January 2014 and has made 218 appearances in all competitions since then, scoring 45 goals and assisting 37 times.
He would be a fantastic signing for any club next season if Utd decide to not renew his contract.
Ander Herrera – Manchester United
Combative midfielder Ander Herrera joins Valencia and Mata on the free agent list this summer with rumours of PSG interesting in signing the Spaniard.
Manchester United have confirmed Ander Herrera is to leave the club after five seasons at Old Trafford and reports earlier this week confirming that Herrera has signed a pre-contract with the French champions.
James Milner – Liverpool
Experienced midfielder James Milner is reaching the end of his current deal at Anfield and will be available on a free this summer.
The Englishman is a seasoned professional in the Premier League, making his debut at 16-years-old for Leeds. Since then he has appeared 690 times in the league, scoring 53 goals and assisting 81.
Milner has won two Premier League titles, one FA Cup, one League Cup and one Community Shield with Man City.
Olivier Giroud – Chelsea
France international Olivier Giroud comes to the end of his deal this summer and is available on a free.
Giroud joined the Blues in January 2018 for £15m and has appeared 61 times in that period, scoring 17 goals. The striker has mainly provided back-up to Alvaro Morata when he was at the club and Gonzalo Higuain since he joined and could look for more opportunities this summer.
Chelsea do have the option to extend his contract for another year, but after being on the periphery for so long the Frenchman could look for a fresh start with first-team football guaranteed.
Danny Welbeck – Arsenal
England international Danny Welbeck announced he was leaving the Gunners this week and is available on a free transfer this summer.
The striker has been injury-hit of late but, when fit, he is a nuisance for defenders and can be clinical in front of goal.
After leaving Man Utd in 2014 he joined Arsenal and has made 126 appearances for the club, scoring 32 goals and assisting 15.
Fernando Llorente – Spurs
Spain international Fernando Llorente finishes our Free Agent XI. The 34-year-old joined the club in August 2017 to provide back-up for star striker Harry Kane.
However, this season especially, Llorente has been vital in Spurs’ progression in Europe coming up with big goals at the right time. He scored the winner against Man City in the Quarter Finals of the Champions League.
His current deal runs to the end of the season and could play a pivotal role in the chances of beating Liverpool in the final. LLlorente is fighting for a new contract at Spurs but could be let go on a free this summer.
